A well-painted landscape mural can improve any site by “dissolving the wall”, creating the impression of a greater space for the senses of the viewer to expand into, invoking the freshness and harmony of a natural environment.
According to the theory of “Biophilia” we humans instinctively resonate with nature. Thus visions of a natural environment atmospheric depth and richness, can engender a feeling of spaciousness and well-being, even within a built environment.
My way of painting, evolved over the years, of combining airbrush and spray techniques with finely detailed brushwork, can facilitate superb renditions of underwater scenes and creatures. Being a keen snorkeler and occasional SCUBA diver, I have always been fascinated with the challenge of depicting the light and depth of the submarine world.
Murals for schools have become some of my most favoured works to do. The staff, students and parents are the most pleasant and appreciative people for me to work around, and all the Public Schools I have had the privilege of working for have been havens of loving care.
I always encourage the teachers to bring their classes to my worksite for me to explain what I am doing, and for the children to ask me questions. In these days of instant gratification, I believe it’s important for youngsters to witness the progress of creating a large-scale artwork, and to be able to learn from the artist about the process.
I have also enjoyed developing and employing Group Participation processes in several Public Schools to great effect for all concerned.
Graffiti tags are a scourge in many public spaces, and several local councils within the Sydney area (see list of clients) have contracted Robin to create artworks on these walls, which they have found are subsequently very rarely defaced by vandals. He usually completes the works with quality anti-graffiti protection, so any tags that may appear can be efficiently removed.
The Elco Tuff-coat anti-graffiti two-pack finish Robin uses and recommends, also contains extra UV protection, it thus also extends the life of exterior artworks beyond that of the Dulux Weathershield top quality paint he uses. Clients often desire a mural to be created on brick walls, either bare or previously painted. Making patterns using the horizontal lines of the bricks as a basic grid is a practical way of making large colourful abstract decorative murals for an economic price per sq mtr. Institutions such as Local Councils, and Corporate clients such as Telstra, with the expansive brick walls of their buildings being prone to graffiti tagging, have relished these reasonably priced creative solutions.
Clients may have a specific image or general theme with personal or commercial significance that they want me to interpret - and they are invariably delighted with the result! Canvases and panels are often a practical alternative to a mural painted directly on a wall because they can be moved and re-fitted, if location circumstances change. Artworks can be painted on panels for both interior and exterior wall sites for residences and businesses.
As with works for commercial purposes, you may have an image or theme of personal significance that you want expertly rendered on paper, canvas or panel.
You also might prefer to have yourself or a special person portrayed, either as a drawing or a painting. I can work from life by having a sitting together with the subject, or from a good photo, to be completed in my studio.
Clear communication between us is essential to have your artistic needs met by me, and anything is possible!
Canvases may be ordered in specific dimensions and colour harmonies to compliment furnishings and create a stunning feature for your home.
Taking part in creating a large artwork in a public space can be an enjoyable and affirming community-building experience for young and old alike.
By providing participants with the materials, colours and instruction to encourage their own expression, everyone can have a fulfilling creative experience.
I have evolved practical ways to give each person the opportunity to paint their own unique piece of a large-scale composition. By adding flourishes of colour around the marks of the other creators, (but never covering them), I ultimately bring the complete work to fruition, while it is “owned” by all.
Using paints and materials of the highest quality and finally sealing and protecting against vandalism, moisture and UV radiation, we ensure that these collaborative public artworks endure for many years. While these collaborative works have so far been mainly focussed around the participation of children, I would like in future, to facilitate large-scale community murals to include creators of all ages.
